Early School

Welcome to the Early School, the preschool and kindergarten division of Lucy Daniels School.

Our Early School offers a unique, intensive, classroom-based therapeutic program for children ages three to six who are experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties at home or in school.

In-classroom interventions are individually tailored to each child’s social and emotional needs within a group setting and are guided by communication between parents and teachers, parents and their parent therapist, and our team of early childhood professionals. Special attention is paid to helping each child:

  • comfortably separate from parents
  • develop independence and autonomy
  • communicate thoughts, ideas, and feelings effectively
  • play with peers and maintain meaningful friendships
  • collaborate and participate in a group

Our Preschool Program

Our preschool classroom consists of two therapeutic teachers and an average class size of six to eight children.

The therapeutic aspects of the preschool program include helping each child develop and strengthen his/her internal (emotional) capacities to be able to comfortably and successfully join a group setting.

Sample Preschool Schedule

9:00 – 9:30 Arrival/Free choice
9:30 – 10:00 Outside/Playground
10:00 – 10:20 Snack time
10:20 – 10:30 Morning meeting
10:30 – 11:40 Free choice (learning centers and free-play)
11:40 – 12:00 Story time and departure

In addition to their daily schedule, our preschoolers sing and make music with our music teacher and participate in art projects with their teachers and guest artists. The preschoolers also use our outdoor garden and greenhouse.

Our Kindergarten Program

Our full-day kindergarten program builds on the therapeutic work of the preschool program, with an additional emphasis on serving as a transitional year between the preschool and elementary years.

The kindergarten classroom consists of two therapeutic teachers and an average class size of six to eight children. In addition to their focus on helping children develop and strengthen their capacities to be members of a group, teachers pay special attention to nurturing their students’ academic and social development.
