CARY, NC – An all-star chef assemblage led by Steven Deveraux Greene, Executive Chef of the The Umstead Hotel & Spa’s award-winning culinary team, will unite with the extraordinary puppetry troupe, Paperhand Puppets Intervention, in this years “strings attached” Expressions. A Celebration of Food and Art. It’s a “party with a purpose” being held on Friday, November 14, upholding its reputation as a one-of-a-kind evening filled with creatively decadent cuisine and exquisite art to benefit Lucy Daniels Center.

It is easy to understand why tickets for Expressions have sold out for the past two years: they are the must-have invitation for the season to an intriguing party.  Central to its enticement is an elaborate, multi-course meal inspired by Paperhand’s artistry and complemented with expert wine pairings. This is all enjoyed in The Umstead’s incomparable setting, which has served as the venue since Expressions’ 2011 debut.  The Five Star hotel, located in the northeastern Piedmont region of North Carolina, is of top sophistication and provides the perfect backdrop to such a unique marriage between arts and cuisine.

Expressions eagerly awaits the appearance of Vivian Howard, star of PBS documentary “A Chef’s Life,” the Kinston restaurant she operates with her husband, as part of the culinary team this year. Another anticipated addition to the team is Kelly Fields, the pastry chef for the John Besh group and nominee for Food & Wine’s 2012 Best New Pastry Chef award. Other chefs will be added to this already enviable line-up.

In addition to dazzling attendees’ taste buds, Expressions will feature an exclusive Paperhand Puppets performance. Since 1998, Paperhand has crafted magical puppets, masks and shadow play performances for all ages, entertaining diverse audiences with stories told to beating drums— stories that illuminate love for the earth and its creatures. Donovan Zimmerman, a cofounder of Paperhand, says the troupe’s collaboration with Expressions is well-matched “Paperhand is thrilled and deeply honored to have been chosen as the featured artists for Expressions 2014! The Lucy Daniels Center does extremely important work that aligns with Paperhand’s mission as they work very hard to make the world a better place. The possibilities are very exciting.”

Expressions’ ultimate goal is to raise proceeds to benefit children and families who are receiving life-changing mental and emotional health services at the nationally renowned Lucy Daniels Center.  Statistics show that approximately 1 out of 5 children will experience a mental disorder. Expressions provides the opportunity to meaningfully partake in an unforgettable evening of mingling and dining with philanthropists, lovers of art and enthusiasts of food and wine while helping some of our most vulnerable – children who are emotionally hurting.

A limited number of individual tickets will be available in late September, and sponsorships are available now.
