Cary, NC –The Lucy Daniels Center has wrapped up its Bookmarked! 2011 festival after hosting more than 30 free children’s book readings by local celebrity-heroes, special appearances by author/illustrator Molly Bang and a family concert at Fred Fletcher Park. Overall festival attendance was estimated at 3,400, up from 2,500 for the inaugural Bookmarked! event in 2010.
Readers included Dr. Lucy Daniels, The Durham Divas, Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker, WUNC’s Dick Gordon, Chef Scott Crawford of Herons Restaurant, and NBC 17 anchor Donald Jones and former chief meteorologist Janice Jones. Public readings took place at venues such as The Green at North Hills, Marbles Kids Museum, Barnes and Noble Booksellers at Brier Creek, Artsplosure, and eight Wake County public libraries. Numerous child enrichment programs hosted readings for their students as well.
Bookmarked! 2011’s featured author/illustrator, three-time Caldecott Honor Award winner Molly Bang, made several public appearances May 14-15, including readings at Quail Ridge Books and the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences. She was awarded the 2011 Lucy Daniels Award, which recognizes a body of work that contributes to children’s healthy social and emotional growth, at a reception for Bookmarked! 2011 sponsors.
Theatre in the Park’s Ira David Wood III and Betsy, star of PBS Kids’ Betsy’s Kindergarten Adventures, joined kids’ band Mommie and bluegrass group Leah Magner and Friends at the festival’s first Family Fun Concert, held at Fletcher Park May 15. Attendees enjoyed children’s activities and crafts, free makeovers by presenting sponsor The Body Shop, and a raffle featuring prizes from Blue Water Spa, Learning Express, Arts Together and others.
The public’s response to the expanded offerings has been gratifying, Bookmarked! 2011 organizers said.
“Based on the success of Bookmarked! 2011, we are already looking ahead to next year,” said Chris Marin, LDC Board member and chair of the Bookmarked! 2011 committee. “We invite our friends to visit the Lucy’s Book Club website, www.lucysbookclub.org, and/or our Facebook page to see photos, video, and TV coverage of the events and join the club.”
In addition to celebrating the joys of reading with young children, Bookmarked!’s purpose is to raise both awareness of and funding for Lucy’s Book Club and the Center’s Family Support Fund, which helps bridge the gap between what families can afford to pay for their child’s mental health services at the Center and their actual cost. Bookmarked! 2011 reached its fundraising goal of $75,000 through the support of corporate and individual sponsors, including presenting sponsor The Body Shop, event sponsor Wachovia A Wells Fargo Company, and platinum sponsors Time Warner Cable and Steven and Becky Scott.
