Cary, NC - Staff, board members, volunteers, and friends of the Lucy Daniels Center continue to develop an exciting calendar of events for Bookmarked! 2011, a two-week festival for young children and their families that celebrates the special joys of reading with children. The festivities are scheduled for May 6 – 22.
Part of Lucy's Book Club, the Center’s signature public outreach program, Bookmarked! 2011 will feature children’s book readings by local “celebrity-heroes” at venues across Wake County, a family-friendly concert at Fletcher Park, a book fair at Quail Ridge Books, and several public appearances by 2011’s featured author, three-time Caldecott Honor Award winner Molly Bang. Most events will be free and open to the public.
Families can join in the fun by bringing their children to book readings at locations including The Green at North Hills (May 7 and 11), Quail Ridge Books (May 9, 14, and 21), and Marbles Kids Museum (May 10). Readers will also share the Kids’ Stage at Artsplosure on May 21 and 22. Additional locations and celebrity readers will be announced at a later date.
Children’s book author/illustrator Molly Bang, the 2011 recipient of the Lucy Daniels Award recognizing an author’s significant contribution to children’s literature that supports healthy social and emotional development, will headline several Bookmarked! events on May 14 and 15. Her appearances include readings and book signings at Quail Ridge Books and the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences on Saturday, May 14, plus a workshop for parents and teachers at the Lucy Daniels Center on Sunday, May 15.
The festival will also feature a Lucy’s Book Club Book Fair on May 14-15 and May 21-22, hosted by Quail Ridge Books. Families may pre-order select books by Ms. Bang and have them personalized during her visit to the area. Quail Ridge has agreed to donate 15% of sale proceeds to Bookmarked! fundraising efforts whenever anyone mentions the book fair at check-out.
New to the celebration this year is the Family Fun Concert, taking place at Raleigh’s Fletcher Park on the afternoon of Sunday, May 15. The concert will feature Raleigh’s own kids’ band Mommie, plus other family-friendly entertainers and readers, children’s activities, concessions, and a raffle for exciting prize packages.
Bookmarked!’s purpose is to raise both awareness of and funding for Lucy’s Book Club and the Center’s Family Support Fund, which helps bridge the gap between what families can afford to pay for their child’s mental health services at the Center and their actual cost. Sponsorships in amounts ranging from $250 to $15,000 are available now and offer corporations and foundations the opportunity for high visibility throughout the two-week event and for Lucy’s Book Club in 2011-12. Overall attendance of Bookmarked! events is estimated at more than 5,000 children and their families. Contact Joyce Watkins King, the Center’s director of development, at 919.677.1400 x120 for more information about sponsorships and gift-in-kind donations.
