Cary, NC -- Lucy Daniels Center is teaming up with volunteers from BB&T’s Lighthouse Project initiative to complete the final phase of the Lucy Daniels Center Teaching Garden by laying pavers for walking paths and assisting in the construction of the greenhouse.
Associates from BB&T Cary will volunteer their time in May and June to help build what will become an outdoor classroom and horticultural therapy site for children and families who are being served through one of the Center’s mental or emotional health programs. Volunteers will plant vegetation, care for the food, harvest and cook it, and create nature-related crafts. The Teaching Garden will also serve as a community source for fresh produce that will promote healthier food choices and offer economic assistance through food pantry donations.
Lucy Daniels Center’s Teaching Garden is located at the Center’s Cary, NC, facility. The Bayer USA Foundation awarded a grant in 2013 to the Center for completion of the garden’s first phase. BB&T’s support will be used to complete the final phase which includes the purchase and construction of an outdoor classroom. “This is more than just a garden. This is a community resource that will allow for academic enrichment, emotional healing, and encouragement of healthy eating. We cannot tell you how much this will mean to the children and families we serve and to the community at large,” states Don Rosenblitt, the executive and clinical director of Lucy Daniels Center.
Lucy Daniels Center and BB&T invite other members of the community to join them as volunteers. For more information, contact Clarenda Stanley-Anderson at email@example.com or 919.677.1400.
BB&T hopes their efforts encourage others in the community to volunteer their time and support organizations such as Lucy Daniels Center. “We wanted to work with the Lucy Daniel’s Center because of the great work they do in Cary,” said Kelly Sain, Market President for BB&T in Cary. “We’re proud to team up with them and help in any way we can.”
BB&T associates have donated more than 265,000 hours in volunteer service and touched the lives of more than 8 million people since the inception of the BB&T Lighthouse Project in 2009. Associates overwhelmingly voted to bring back the initiative this year. For more information about the Lighthouse Project, go to www.bbt.com/bbt/lighthouseproject/.
