Lucy Daniels Center announces the featured artist and chefs for its second annual benefit, Expressions. A Celebration of Food and Art., which will be hosted by The Umstead Hotel and Spa on November 9, 2012.
This year, The Umstead’s executive chef Scott Crawford, pastry chef Daniel Benjamin, and two guest chefs—Tarver King of The Ashby Inn and Restaurant in Paris, VA, and Ryan Smith of Empire State South in Atlanta, GA—will take their culinary inspirations for the evening’s meal from the distinctive work of Pittsboro, NC-based potter Mark Hewitt.
Mr. Hewitt uses local clays and blends different North Carolina folk traditions into a contemporary style that has attracted a sizeable international following. His work has been featured in the Smithsonian magazine and on the cover of American Craft magazine, and he has exhibited throughout the U.S. and in London and Tokyo. Most recently, he was invited by the prestigious La Meridiana International School of Ceramic Art in Tuscany, Italy, to lead a workshop on pottery throwing in June 2013.
The themes and artistic elements of Hewitt’s work will provide the creative spark for Expressions’ one-of-a-kind menu. Attendees of Expressions will enjoy a gourmet, multi-course meal and exclusive commentary from Hewitt about his art in a setting synonymous with discerning taste in both food and art: the Five Star- and Five Diamond-award winning Umstead Hotel and Spa.
Hewitt and Crawford have both been invigorated by their partnership for Expressions.
“Chef Crawford and I have devoted our lives to our respective passions, and our collaboration for Expressionsfeels like a perfect fit,” said Hewitt. “As we prepare, our excitement is palpable: to work together at this level is exhilarating, inspiring even greater focus and flair.”
Added Crawford, “It is such a pleasure to work with Mark Hewitt and understand his creative process and then translate his inspirations and technique into our artful cuisine. The fact that it benefits such an important program in our community as the Lucy Daniels Center makes this event one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.”
Located in Cary, NC, the Center is the area’s largest and most comprehensive nonprofit provider of mental health services for children, serving more than 600 families per year. Expressions benefits the Center’s Family Support Fund, which helps close the gap between what families can afford to pay for their child’s services and what it costs to provide them.
