The Expressions V gala held on Friday, November 20, 2015 at The Umstead Hotel and Spa and benefiting the Lucy Daniels Center was a big success, garnering an estimated $100,000 in support for the Center's programs for children with emotional and mental health challenges in the Triangle. The Center is celebrating its 25th year during 2015-16.
Guests enjoyed a creative menu of food and wine paired by The Umstead's executive chef, Steven Devereaux Greene, and his staff as well as featured guest chefs Ken Vedrinski of Charleston, SC; Michael Kramer of Greenville, SC; and Evan Sheridan of The Umstead. They took their inspiration from the works of featured artist Beverly McIver of Durham, who was a special guest at the event. Honorary co-chairs for Expressions V were Frank and Julia Daniels. Emcee for the evening was Steve Daniels of WTVD/ABC 11, one of the event sponsors.
A silent auction, live auction and Fund a Need event called forth spirited bidding on special food and wine packages offered by Cantina 18, 1705 Prime, La Farm bakery, Cameron Bar and Grill and Greene's own kaseiki dinner for six at Herons. Dr. Lucy Daniels and Dr. Donald Rosenblitt, who co-founded the Center 25 years ago, spoke of their dreams of a place -- now reality -- that was devoted to the individual inner child and could speak to the broad social problems of today's children. A past parent spoke about what the Lucy Daniels Center and Lucy Daniels School had meant to her eldest son, one of the first children in the program. Medallions made and painted by today's Lucy Daniels students were a sellout among the evening's guests, also raising funds for Expressions.
Special thanks go to event sponsors The Umstead Hotel and Spa, PNC Bank, ABC 11/WTVD, Blend Media Boutique, US Foods, Ken Demery Photography and chef sponsors Julia and Frank Daniels and Michael and Candace Olander. Table sponsors were Dr. Lucy Daniels; Jean Smith Hall and Russell Hall; Linda and Orage Quarles; Sarah Winslow and David Stradley; Heather and Burton Craige; and Rex Healthcare.
Expressions is one of two major fundraisers annually for the LDC, the second being the 5k Inside/Out Walk/Run for Children's Emotional Health, set for April 16, 2016. Funds raised through both events go to the Center's Family Support Fund, ensuring that all families with children receiving LDC services can do so regardless of their ability to pay.
