Beverly McIver, who says her art is a “visual diary of what’s currently happening in my life,” will be the featured artist for a fundraiser benefiting the Lucy Daniels Center on Nov. 20, 2015. In addition, her work will be the inspiration for the dishes created that evening by a team of chefs led by The Umstead Hotel and Spa’s executive chef, Steven Devereaux Greene.

The event, called Expressions V. A Celebration of Food and Art, will be held at The Umstead and celebrates the 25th anniversary of Lucy Daniels Center, the region’s largest nonprofit children’s mental and emotional health agency. Cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. with the chefs and artist McIver, followed by a multicourse gourmet dinner and a live auction.

McIver is widely acknowledged as a significant presence in contemporary American art and has charted a new direction as an African-American woman artist. Born in Greensboro, N.C. and growing up in the projects, she is the Ebenshade Professor of the Practice in Studio Arts at Duke University. Her works are in the collections of the N.C. Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Mint Museum as well as in significant corporate and private collections. She has taught at Arizona State University, Duke University, N.C. State University and N.C. Central University.

McIver’s oldest sister, Renee, is mentally disabled and is under the legal guardianship of her sister. Their story was told in Raising Renee, a feature-length documentary film produced with HBO and nominated for an Emmy Award.

McIver recently met with Chef Greene and his staff to discuss her art in connection with the food and wine for Expressions V. Also assisting in the evening’s culinary offerings will be Chef Michael Kramer of Greenville, S.C. and Chef Ken Vedriski of Charleston, S.C.

Proceeds from Expressions V will enable the Lucy Daniels Center to continue providing services for children up to age 12 who are having social, emotional or behavioral difficulty. Thanks to the Center’s Family Support Fund, more than 90 percent of families pay less than the full cost of treatment, and one family in six receives services for free.

Honorary chairs of Expressions V are Frank and Julia Daniels. Top sponsors for the event include The Umstead Hotel and Spa, ABC 11, US Foods and PNC Bank. Tables for eight begin at $2500 and individual tickets are $275. To purchase, visit http://www.lucydanielscenter.org/news-events/expressions.
